A blue piggy bank with a hand dropping in a coin that symbolises saving money.

As businesses begin to plan for the year ahead, many will be asking if all the money spent on social media paid ads was worth it? Many businesses are feeling the crunch as we enter the new year, but for many, the costs are far greater than others. While larger businesses are beginning cutbacks to their marketing budgets to save costs, many smaller businesses do not have the luxury and need to make the most of their marketing to help promote their business or go bust! But you don't need to break the bank when it comes to social media. In fact - you can do a lot of the work for free and, in some cases, make more ROI on your organic content than on paid ads! But how can you start this process?

There is a reason why you need to get smarter with your paid ads, if not, get rid of them completely! The problem is when you put, say, £100.00 into your paid ads spend, all you are doing is feeding the big social media companies for a chance to stand in the same room as your competitors whilst you all shout the same thing. No one wins, and you and your competitors keep throwing money at the problem so no one stands out and you have just wasted £100.00.

You need to shift your way of thinking to make yourself stand out in the digital marketplace. If you and your competitors are all doing the same thing to grab people's attention, your content needs to be way more interesting than theirs. If you create relatable and engaging content that resonates with a core demographic that wants to listen to you, You won't have to spend as much on paid ads because the community you will build around your content will share and interact with your product or service. On top of this, your content will be stronger and if used as a paid ad will generate more ROI and you won't need to spend as much at all.

But how do you start creating that content to make you stand out? Well, there is a revolutionary idea that many people would disagree with but is my 'secret sauce' for content making...

Stop trying to sell your business.

Sounds weird and counterintuitive, But think about it: These days, people can find tons of options online for pretty much everything, So your product or service is going to be the same as 500+ other people's product or service. You can't always be the cheapest or be made out of the world's finest materials, so instead focus on how your product or service makes lives better. Or, connect with the type of people who would use your product by basing posts on their values, interests, and lifestyle.

Once you have found how to find that niche approach, you can start creating a content mix of videos, photos, and graphics to continue that messaging and align your brand in a new perspective that works better for you! Beginning that journey can seem incredibly intimidating so Ogle has created a Social Media Calendar template and helpsheet to springboard ideas and help get your business into the new mindset for 2025.
